About Nakabango

Playing a game in Nakabango
Nakabango is a village in the Jinja district of East Central Uganda, located approximately 20 minutes north of Jinja, the second largest city in Uganda. Situated on Kamuli Road which connects Jinja and Kamuli, this village is in an ideal location for future development.
However, there are many challenges in Nakabango. Almost 1200 orphans are the legacy of war, disease, and HIV/AIDS. Despite these problems, the village of Nakabango and its relationship with Messiah Lutheran are a shining light of what is possible when God's people partner to help each other.

Water

In 2007, shortly after the partnership began, a borehole well was installed to provide a clean water source for the village and people in the vicinity. Previously, children had to travel long distances to gather clean water instead of going to school and exposing them to the dangers of traveling along a busy road. The relatively small expense of installing and maintaining the well has been a blessing to the community.
Education

Prior to 2011, Nakabango's school was small and consisted of a mud hut and some trees and was only able to educate a few dozen children. With the construction of a large community & worship center in 2011, Nakabango expanded their school to provide education for all grade levels and their regular attendance is almost 500 children.
Future plans for the village include the creation of a vocational school to teach students skills for sewing and carpentry.

Economy

Nakabango uses much of their land for agriculture, but also has facilities for sewing and carpentry. As the school has expanded, these facilities have become invaluable as it has allowed the village to make their own school uniforms and make simple benches for the students.
Future plans for the village include the expanding the carpentry operations so it can become a small mill for the surrounding area and expanding the sewing center to support schools founded by Hearts & Hope in other villages.
